William Clark McClure was a prominent Saginaw lumberman during the late 1800s. He was a member of the Mitchell and McClure Company which operated mills in Bay City and Saginaw. He served in the 86th Ohio Infantry during the Civil War and saw service in West Virginia and Kentucky. After the war he took a position with the Mitchell Rowland and Co. in Toledo, Ohio, one of the largest lumber firms in the state of Ohio. The firm bought large quantities of lumber from Saginaw and in 1867 sent Mr. McClure to Saginaw to look after the firm's concerns there. He was offered a partnership with the firm of Hamilton, McClure and Co. in 1879. The members of this firm were McClure, John A. Hamilton and Jethro Mitchell. The firm was reorganized under the name of Mitchell and McClure in 1896 after John A. Hamilton died. McClure was also associated with other businesses. He was president of the Handy Wagon Works in Saginaw and was engaged in banking in Gladwin, Michigan with M. C. Scrafford. He was a member of the real estate firm of A. J. Stevens and Co. doing extensive business in Gladwin County. He was a member of the Saginaw board of trade and was foremost in promoting the industrial progress of the community. He was born in Ohio and died in Vienna, Austria in 1904 (Information from his obituary in the Saginaw Courier Herald April 26, 1904, page 5)
